Consumer Electronics Industry Service Issues

The television service industry is in turmoil. Ever decreasing prices of goods (TVs, VCRs, DVD players), along with ever increasing costs of doing business, (insurance, rent, yellow page advertising) has the TV repair industry in a downward spiral.

Manufacturers lower the prices of goods, increase the prices of parts, or even refuse to make parts or literature available.  This effects the consumers-the owners of TVs and other equipment, by making products disposable.  It is often difficult for TV owners to understand why their product costs so much to fix, or why it takes so long. In addition, consumers who have purchased a product, such as an HDTV, which fails within the warranty period, often have to wait months for the manufacturer to supply parts.

I find, everyday, something in the design of a product that makes me wonder if the engineer that designed it requires some-one to get him back and forth to work; or did he do it on purpose to impeded service. I could probably back-engineer everything that comes in this shop and repair it without a service manual; as a matter of fact I do an awful lot, but it is not economical.

I can repair my own car, though I don't anymore. I don't know an auto mechanic that can repair his own TV. They make more money than I.

I can do my own plumbing and electrical work, and frequently do. I don't know a plumber or electrician that can repair his TV. They make more money than I.

I know what medicine I need before I see the doctor, who can't repair his own TV. They make more money than I.

What do these trades have in common? They are not competing DIRECTLY against a Chinese factory

Is this right?  The first letter below was written by an independent servicer in the northeast United States, and is being reproduced here by permission.

A Plea from Electronics Servicers
which has been sent to number state a federal legislators and Attorney's General.

The following three articles are on the United Servicers Association Website.  The United Servicers Association's purpose is "To develop and provide services and programs intended to assist members in building strong businesses for the purpose of competing successfully in North America's competitive environment."  Although these articles, were written expressly about household appliance service issues, they are virtually indistinguishable from the Consumer Electronics repair industry.
